Just a quick note to say that the Productivity Commission has released their report on the current restrictions on parallel importation of books under the Copyright Act 1968. Information on the scope and objectives of the Commission’s review are available here. The Commission “… concluded that the current restrictions create material upward pressure on book prices in Australia” and that, “By removing the restrictions, local booksellers would have the option of accessing better value books from overseas. Local publishers would have a strong incentive to make their prices more competitive and to look for greater efficiencies in their operations, the report said.” I am hoping to read the report over the next few days and post some thoughts.
